Chapter Twelve

“It’s so good to be home, Vince.” Sydney was caught up in his strong, capable arms the second they spied each other at the airport.

“Yeah. It is.” Caring blue eyes stared deeply into hers, and he offered a brief smile before capturing her lips.

Tucked into the comfort of this embrace, she relished the solid pressure of his body accepting hers, the light rasp of afternoon whiskers on her upper lip and chin. The stress and tension that had kept her body rigid for most of the flight from San Diego to Detroit drained out of her in a flood, when it struck her what being home really meant.

With her eyes closed, she let the unique scent of him she’d missed so much surround her then wrapped her arms around his neck and held on. “You are so good for me.”

He flexed his arms to keep her close, buried his face in her hair, and released a sigh. “It’s good to have you home.”

“It was nice of you to pick me up. Randall and Nancy were in rare form this trip, bickering like a couple of school children on the playground. Only worse. I don’t think I could have taken another minute of it on the drive from the airport.” She ran a hand through her hair. “Then to top it off, I ran into—”

Wonk! Wonk! Wonk!

The low blast of a horn erupted from nearby. With a thump and whir the luggage carousel they stood beside started to rotate.

Vince lifted his head. “Looks like the baggage handlers are on top of things.”

“Good for them.” Unable to resist the sarcasm, Sydney was reluctant to let him go as they broke apart. “Well what do you know.” She stepped up to the circling conveyor as, wonder of wonders, her two maroon suitcases were the first items out of the chute. “These are mine.” She glanced back at Vince.

“Let me.” Grabbing one handle then the other, he pulled them to the floor. “I was able to park pretty close.”

Close was right. In no time, they’d navigated the escalators and hallway leading to the attached parking garage and his metallic silver Jeep Laredo.

“Get in and relax.” He placed both hands on either side of her face and brushed his mouth against hers before he ushered her into the front seat. “I’ll put your luggage in the back.”

“Okay.” She did as she was told without argument.

With his hand still on her shoulder, he straightened but didn’t let go. “You look exhausted.”

“I am.” Smiling up at him, she set her purse on the floor in front of her.

“Take it easy. I’ll be right back.” He shut her door and she immediately relaxed against the seat. Briefly.

Spurred on by his comment about her appearance, she sat forward then lowered the visor to peer in the mirror. Granted she didn’t look her ultimate best. Though not creased or puffy, the skin directly under her eyes was a shade or two darker than the rest of her face. A grueling non-stop work schedule capped off by a cross country flight could do that to a person.
